When I met with Carla late last year she told me that a winter wedding wasn’t a compromise of seasons. For her, a beautiful, snowy day on February 13th, 2010 would be her ideal. She asked if I was up for shooting outside, to which I replied, “You bet!” thinking that I would easily outlast her with my big winter parka, faux-fur hat and ready-for-the-arctic boots. I underestimated this country girl.
After the ceremony, we photographed outside from St. Boniface to the River Trail near the Fort Garry Hotel. Carla, in her unbelievably beautiful cream dress, funky black/burgundy stole and new husband by her side, was – in a word, invincible. Admittedly Peter was shivering more than Carla, but remained the proverbial trooper. I also think it’s a great testament to what wonderful people they are that their friends and family braved the cold full of smiles and bereft of any complaint.
It was absolutely fantastic to spend time with Carla & Peter on their Big Day. It was heartwarming to see how welcoming they were to all of their guests with kind smiles & big hugs. Photographing them receive everyone at the reception I was struck at how everyone seemed to be close to them – an exception for certain with over 200 guests! I was also struck again during the edits at just how much these two adore each other. From sweet little glances at the ceremony to the happiness they exuded during their first dance. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – lucky me to be a part of it!

Peter and Carla’s sister surprised her by bringing (and grooming) her family dog from the farm.

I love the warming shacks along the River Trail!

It was quite a treat to travel to the Dominican Republic to photograph Rachel and Lynyrd’s wedding this past January. Truly two of the nicest people with the nicest group of family and friends. The weather was looking iffy the day of wedding, but the calm and patient Rachel stayed positive and we managed to dash out to the beach in between the rain showers where we enjoyed a short, sweet and very windy ceremony. The emotion was pouring out of everyone (no pun intended), it was so lovely to witness such nice people all showing their love and support for an extremely sweet couple. Their friends and wedding party were super fun people, they were all really into the jumping shots on the beach and I think we got some really good ones. I absolutely loved capturing Lynyrd’s infectious laugh, and how much he made Rachel laugh, there was so much connection and joy between them, making my job extremely easy. We did get a little bit caught in the rain while I was shooting them with their amazing little two year old Ronin, you could definitely see that he was extremely loved and treasured by his parents and such a cute little guy. The reception was a nice intimate gathering which made for a lot of tears of joy, one of my favorite shots is of the brides maid hiding her tears behind her fan. At the end of the night Rachel and Lynyrd were happy to get some creative night shot! which was awesome! Rachel really wanted to capture the lit up palm trees, and then, hey! why not jump in the pool! It was the perfect ending to a perfect shoot, full of new and fun things. It was amazing to shoot a wedding in the Dominican but what made it even more amazing was the people, a special thanks to Rachel and Lynyrd, their families and friends who made this experience one that I will never forget!
