Luckygirl was there when Sylvia and Graeme won this stunning diamond engagement ring at this years Appelt’s Diamond Dash! Super exciting, and what a gorgeous ring! We were equally excited when they asked luckygirl to shoot their wedding this summer. I (Mairen) met up with Sylvia and Graeme on a beautiful sunny early spring day at Assiniboine Park in hopes of catching some of the last bits of hoar frost for their engagement session. But… literally within minutes of getting to park the frost melted away, bummer! So we decided to make the most of it anyways and I really wanted to explore the new family centre building at the duck pond. I was loving all the copper walls and windows! We had a great time! After meeting with S&G I knew that luckygirl would be a good fit for them. Graeme follows many of the same unique and world famous photogs that we follow. He is also a lover of film and polaroid photography. He brought along his precious vintage polaroid which he only uses on special occasions, and will only allow himself to take one photo, due to the fact that polaroid has stopped making film for his type of camera. He was smart though, he bought a good stash of film that will last him for a while. I was super excited when told me I could take one photo with his polaroid! I love this engagement shoot! I can still hear the laughter from tracy + russ’ wedding day. Every minute from getting ready in the morning to bouncing around the dance floor, these two were all capitols F-U-N. I also still get a little teary eyed too when I think of the joy between Tracy & her grandmother hugging after the ceremony. And goosebumps when remembering their entrance into a roomful of family & friends clapping perfectly in unison to Florence + The Machine bursting through the speakers. Such a whirlwind day, with a hilarious wedding party & wonderful family (many from great distances).

I also had a fantastic time working with Don & Lori from McNeill Media Creations – as ALWAYS, such hard-working and down to earth people! And of course, Madeline and her team from Madeline’s Weddings did a phenomenal job planning & decorating the tres hip Four Points Sheraton Hotel.

Tracy (so stunningly gorgeous & cool) + Russ (so suave & smart) – I adore you both and loved being a part of your Big Day. THANK YOU.

where to begin, but at the beginning. mairen met nick on a bus. true story. ‘what a lovely australian man’ and ‘how nice that he’s a budding photographer’. Mairen introduced Nick to me and that summer he came out as our 2nd photographer on a few gigs and it was plain to see that he was mucho talented. mucho. very soon after he and Lindsey decided to move to Australia and start up Skipping Stone Photography. The rest, as they say, is history.

so here we are years later, asked to photograph their nuptials. oh boy. it’s daunting to photograph a friend’s wedding. it’s doubly daunting to photograph a photographer’s wedding (and a fantastic one at that)! Mairen and I poured our hearts into the preparation of their Big Day and happily worked our tokus’ off for this sweet sweet couple. Mother nature reigned supreme and Lindsey’s unbelievable design skills paid off in spades to pull together the most intimate, creative and super fun wedding you can imagine. the whole day seemed to have this golden halo over it. But, of course, all these variables would be moot if it weren’t for them. And I mean ‘them’ in the respect of two people who are so madly in love, so kind to one another, so easy to laugh and so often gave each other that moony eyed look. We were just lucky enough to be witnesses to it & capture it as best we could.

Renee & Brent

To say that blood sweat and tears (of joy of course) went into creating this magnificent wedding just might be an understatement. We knew from the moment we met Renee and Brent that this was going to be a very creative, quirky, cool, artful, tasteful, elegant, and beautiful event. The artistically ambitious and very talented bride (Renee) put so many handcrafted details and inspired thought into her wedding, resulting in the most unique and stunning wedding day that I have ever witnessed. It took Renee three days to make the place cards, using tweezers to place each letter from an old typewriter and hand stamping each name. Every facet of this wedding was full of amazing details, from the incredible kids table to the handmade paper fans to the pies! There was such gratification in being able to photograph a wedding such as this, it truly lent to what we do best, capturing the essence of the subject and expressing it through the art of photography. This is what luckygirl is all about!
